Dung beetle spliced in a photo of the milky-way [Emily Baird / Lund University 2013] (left) . Overlay of forged image and heatmap image (middle). Colour coded probability of local forgery: [low] [high]
Dung Beetles Use the Milky Way for Orientation (Dacke et al. 2013 DOI: 10.1016/j.cub.2012.12.034).
To illustrate their results a group of scientists from the Swedish Lund-University spliced together two images. Several press-agencies fortgot to mark the image as a symbolic illustration and distributet the photoshopped result. Image noise inconsictenies are used for image splicing detection.
